The Hawaiian Airlines Liberty Challenge hosted by New York Outrigger is the largest outrigger race on the East Coast. Previously known as the Liberty World Outrigger Competition, the regatta has grown in its sixteen year history to become one of the most prestigious outrigger canoe races in the world. Team Primo finishes victorious at the 2012 New York Outrigger Liberty Challenge. Team Primo comprised of 6 members in this years event were Kai Bartlett, Scott Gamble, Jimmy Austin, Mike Judd, Kekoa and Felipe. The men’s race covers a 15-mile course in the high traffic harbor of New York and all crews must complete the course without crew substitutions. Not only do the tides and ocean conditions play a huge role in the success of crews, having to navigate and avoid barges, ferries, cruise ships and many other motorized crafts play an inherently dangerous and tactical role.
