Kelia Moniz just placed 2nd overall to Chelsea Williams at the inaugural Swatch Girls Pro China in fun sized waves at Riyuewan Beach. Kelia surfed incredible through the entire event en-route to making her first ASP World Longboard Championship final! Kelia aka “Sister” teamed up with Vertra earlier this year to help promote the importance of practicing safe sun.
Sister demonstrated classic nose riding style and mixed in progressive rail surfing power that proved to be the perfect combination for the waves at Riyuewan.
We caught up with Kelia in transit from China to Bali
Vertra) Congratulations Kelia!!! Tell us how you are feeling right now!
Kelia Moniz) So stoked to finally get a good result! It felt so good to be on the podium, and to have great waves for the event!
V) Was this your first time to China? Can you tell us about your experiences of the place, the people, the food and the waves?
KM) Yes this was my first time to China, and definitely not my last. The waves here were nothing like I expected, we scored some really fun waves! Perfect left hand point breaks! All the people here are so kind and catered to our ever need. They treated us like royalty it was super cool. The food, DELISH! Over all a great trip and I really hope we have this event again next year.
V) You are famously know for your free-surfing skills and graceful style, will this competitive achievement motivate you focus more on the competition side of surfing?
KM) Getting a good result definitely motivates me to be a little more serious when it comes to events knowing that I can do well. But there are only a few stops on the long board tour so it floats my boat perfectly. I just love free surfing and not having that pressure on me.
V) What are your plans for the rest of 2011?
KM) After China I’ll be going to Indo for a boat trip with all the girls from Roxy which I’m really excited about. Never been there before and only hear good things! Stocked up on my vertra sticks and ready for major water time.
V) Who are some influential people that you would like to thank that have helped you along the way?
KM) Always my parents! Constantly encouraging me and guiding me in the right path. They are both amazing and I would not have anything that I have today without them.
