INTERVIEW: VERTRA 5: Brett Simpson

We all know Brett “Simpo” Simpson for his outstanding achievements of winning the US Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach twice in a row in 2009 and 2010! The US Open is one of the most challenging events that any surfer can take down because you are up against 100+ of the World’s best surfers as compared to the WCT Top 44 format (at the time) and not to mention the challenging waves and conditions that South Side HB offers. To win this event once is a prestigious accomplishment, but to go back to back that’s just amamzing and a feat that has only also been done by the late Andy Irons. Now that is a statement in itself!

A really cool fact about Brett’s father Bill Simpson is that he played in the NFL. Bill was a defensive back for the Los Angeles Rams and the Buffalo Bills for eight sucessful seasons. Brett’s definitely a chip off the old block as his work ethic to strive to be the best proved true when he qualified for the elite ASP World Tour in 2010 with a big boost from his US Open victory. Despite his cool, calm and collected demeanor, Simpo is a savvy competitor and is driven to win. He is one of the most respected surfers on tour coming up through the Hobgood stable in his rookie years as he was able to learn the in’s and out’s of the tour from the best. World-class planters were treated to a set–up created by the innovative park crew at Bear unlike anything seen before. The exclusive set up, unique team aspect and jam format, combined with the relaxed and friendly vibe, gave the riders the opportunity to concentrate on their handplant progression as they went for tricks from the hard to undoable list.

Featuring JP Walker, Jeremy Jones, Simon Chamberlain, Scott Stevens, Marko Grilic, Chris Grenier, Cody Rosenthal, Tim Eddy, Ben Bilocq and special guest Dave Downing and Dale Rehberg.

MILL VALLEY SURF: Attention Surf Filmmakers: The 2013 Mill Valley Surf Film Festival is accepting film submissions now through July 1st. The 2nd Annual MVSFF will take place September 13th and 14th.

Attention Surf Filmmakers:

The 2013 Mill Valley Surf Film Festival is accepting film submissions now through July 1st. The 2nd Annual MVSFF will take place September 13th and 14th at The Sweetwater Music Hall.

Rules and Guidelines:

1. Feature Films must be over 30 minutes.
2. Short films must be under 30 minutes.
3. Films must have been completed after January 1, 2011.
4. Films should focus on wave riding (any forms) and the ocean.
5. Films should be submitted via a password protected link (i.e. Vimeo).
6. There is NO submission fee
7. All films must be submitted by July 1.
8. Official selections will be made by August 1.

9. Upon selection, filmmakers must submit their movie in 2 formats:
a. HD digital file on a hard drive (Dropbox is acceptable for short films); and
b. DVD or Blue Ray for back up.
10. Shipping to the festival will be paid for by the filmmaker. The MVSFF will return all hard drives after the festival.
11. Selected films must be received by August 13 or be subject to forfeit their spot in the festival.
